According to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry,in 2009 portable fire extinguisher violations were among the top ten violations encountered during general industry inspections across the state. The requirement of this OSHA standard relates to the placement,use,maintenance,and testing of portable fire extinguishers.

General requirements include educating employees as to the location and operation of approved portable fire extinguishers and ensuring they are operational. If a fire extinguisher has been provided for use,employees must be trained on how to operate it when hired and each year thereafter. This is crucial in case of fire. Untrained people can not use a fire extinguisher safely because they are unaware of how to evaluate a fire and make judgments based on the limitations of the fire extinguisher’s capacity,range,and type. Using the wrong type of extinguisher on a fire can cause re-ignition. For these reasons,follow-up training is standard.

The requirements also include maximum travel distances between employees and fire extinguishers based on Class. For a Class A type fire extinguisher,the travel distance between the employee and extinguisher should not be more than 75 feet. This distance varies

based on class.

Variousinternal inspections are required also. Extinguishers should be visually inspected each month and undergo an annual maintenance check. More thorough internal inspections are required at different intervals depending upon the type of extinguisher. The employer should keep a record indicating the dates of these checks.
